Weddings at the City Hall

General information about City of Stockholm

Wedding ceremonies are arranged on Saturdays between 2 and 6 pm. The ceremonies take place in the Oval Room and last for about five minutes. The Oval Room has a maximum capacity of 15 guests. The ceremonies are performed in Swedish, but can be performed in other languages if requested. All ceremonies are free of charge.

Required documents

To get married in the City Hall, you first need to apply for a Certificate of No Impediment at the Swedish Tax Office. The document is called ”Hindersprövning” in Swedish.

The two documents you receive from the Tax Office, "Hindersprövningsintyg" and "Intyg vigsel" should be sent to the City Hall at least nine weeks before the ceremony to avoid cancellation. If any delays occur, please contact the City Hall via phone or e-mail.

The day of the ceremony

To reach the Oval Room, use the entrance from Hantverkargatan 1
and walk across the Civic Courtyard towards the waterside park.
Take the open-air steps on the left next to the tower entrance.
The Oval Room is located one flight up.

We kindly request that you your witnesses and guests are gathered and present at least 15 minutes before the time of the ceremony. The City Hall staff is able to serve as witnesses, if required. Please remember to bring valid ID-cards and to inform our staff upon your arrival.

After the ceremony

You will receive a marriage certificate in Swedish and one in English in connection with the ceremony (if requested in advance). After the wedding ceremony, your documents will be sent to the Tax Office for registration. If you require other documentation to verify your marriage in your country besides the marriage certificate, please contact the Tax Office. With your marriage certificate you can also contact a Notarius Publicus for an official stamp.
